Kodak/Wang Image OCX Controls - OCXs Overview

Imaging for Windows proved to be really popular with Windows programmers because it exposes 4 ActiveX OCXs – the Kodak Image Admin OCX, the Kodak Image Edit/Annotation OCX, the Kodak Image Scan OCX and Kodak Image Thumbnail OCX – for use in customized applications. Programmers who need to image-enable their applications can easily add these 4 ActiveX OCXs into their programs to “immediately” provide imaging functionality. However, the “free” versions of Imaging for Windows restricts and hides some of the properties and method of these ActiveX controls – e.g. the DeSpeckle method of the Kodak Image Edit OCX is only available with Imaging for Windows Professional Edition and not available with the “free” Imaging for Windows versions that ship with Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 98 and Windows 2000.

The Professional Edition also provided extended imaging functionality through additional ActiveX OCXs – e.g. Image OCR control.

The ActiveX OCXs were developed and distributed as part of Imaging for Windows. When Wang Laboratories owned Imaging for Windows, these ActiveX controls were labeled with the Wang brand – e.g. Wang Image Edit Control. When Kodak bought over Imaging for Windows, Kodak kept the file names of the ActiveX controls – e.g. ImgEdit.ocx, but changed the names in Windows' Registry – e.g. Kodak Image Edit Control. Fortunately, Kodak decided to keep the ClassID.

Kodak Image Admin Control

The Kodak Image Admin OCX provides functionality to manage image files:
1. Create and delete directories
2. Create and delete image files
3. Open, save, and print image documents
4. Append, insert, and replace pages in multi-page image documents
5. Manage file (summary) properties

Kodak Image Edit Control

The Kodak Image Edit OCX provides functionality to display, annotate and manipulate images. The Kodak Image Edit OCX also contains annotation functionality bundled into the same OCX file. Supported file formats include:

AWD*, GIF*, TIFF, BMP, JPG, WIFF*, DCX, PCX and XIF

* AWD is not available with Imaging for Windows NT 4.0. GIF and WIFF are only available with Imaging for Windows 98.

Image Annotation

The Kodak Image Edit OCX includes several properties, methods, and events that enable the developer to add annotation functions to application programs. The annotation functions permit the application to annotate displayed images. The annotation types that are available are: Straight Line, Freehand Line, Hollow Rectangle, Filled Rectangle, Image Embedded, Image Reference, Text, Text Stamp, Text From File and Attach-a-Note.

Image annotation can be done programmatically or a standard Annotation Tool Palette can be invoked to implement annotation capability without any coding.

Image Manipulation

The Kodak Image Edit OCX has properties, methods, and events that enable the developer to add image manipulation functions to application programs. However, most of the functionality is only available with the professional edition. Examples of standard image manipulation functionality available from the “free” version of Imaging for Windows in Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 98 and Windows 2000 are: Rotate, Flip and Clipboard functions.

Kodak Image Scan Control

The Kodak Image Scan OCX provides functionality to scan documents through a TWAIN interface. Applications that are created with the Kodak Image Scan OCX can only work with TWAIN scanners.

The Kodak Image Scan OCX can be used to:
1. Scan and save image documents as an integral part of the developed application
2. Scan new single-page or multi-page image documents
3. Append and insert scanned pages into existing documents

Kodak Image Thumbnail Control

The Kodak Image Thumbnail OCX provides functionality to display multi-paged images as thumbnails for an easy and quick preview. This allows users to view the contents of an image file quickly. The Kodak Image Thumbnail OCX displays each page of a multi-page image file in a miniature format that requires less memory than a full image.

The Kodak Image Thumbnail OCX is typically used together with Kodak Image Admin control to add or delete pages into a multi-paged image file.

The Kodak Image Thumbnail OCX can be used to:
1. View thumbnail images
2. Display or delete image pages represented by the thumbnail images (when used in conjunction with the Kodak Image Admin OCX)
