Kodak/Wang Image OCX Controls - Some History

A Walk Back In Time

Imaging for Windows is a product that lets users transform paper documents and faxes into electronic documents that can be viewed, annotated, edited, converted, printed, and shared.

Imaging for Windows was originally developed by Wang Laboratories but was subsequently bought over by Kodak. Kodak then sold Imaging for Windows to Eastman Software (currently known as eiStream, Inc).

There are several versions of Imaging for Windows – Imaging for Windows 95, Imaging for Windows NT, Imaging for Windows 98, Imaging for Windows 2000 and Imaging for Windows Professional. Imaging for Windows Professional is currently the only copy that can be licensed to run on Windows XP.

Imaging for Windows & Windows XP

Microsoft licensed Imaging for Windows 95, Imaging for Windows NT, Imaging for Windows 98 and Imaging for Windows 2000 from Eastman Software, Inc to be shipped as standard components in Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 98 and Windows 2000. Unfortunately, Microsoft did not license the Imaging for Windows for inclusion with Windows XP. Instead, the Windows Picture And Fax Viewer and the Scanner And Camera Wizard were introduced as a replacement for Imaging for Windows.

Windows XP users who want to use the familiar Imaging for Windows application or need some of the advanced features provided by Imaging for Windows (that are not found in the Windows Picture And Fax Viewer and the Scanner And Camera Wizard) will have to purchase the professional version of Imaging for Windows from eiStream, Inc. There is now only one version that can be licensed for use with Windows XP – Imaging for Windows Professional Edition.

Users who upgraded their computer operating systems from Windows 2000 to Windows XP will find that Imaging for Windows is kept intact.
