Microsoft Office
Document Imaging 2003 (MODI)
Programmable Object Model and Viewer OCX Control
Microsoft introduced Microsoft Office Document Imaging
(MODI) as part of the Microsoft Office software suite in
Office XP and Office 2003. Microsoft Office Document
Imaging (MODI) allows users to scan, OCR, view and
perform minor editing on images. The good news is that
Microsoft Office Document Imaging 2003 (MODI), the
version that ships with Office 2003, allows automation
through a programmable Object Model and a programmable
Viewer OCX Control. The Microsoft Office XP version of Document Imaging
does not allow automation.
The Microsoft Office Document Imaging 2003 (MODI) object model makes it possible to develop custom applications for managing
images and the recognizable text that they contain.
Programmers can program the Microsoft Office Document Imaging 2003 (MODI)
object model from any development tool that supports the Component Object Model (COM) by setting a reference to the Microsoft Office Document Imaging 11.0 Type Library.
The Microsoft Office Document Imaging 2003 (MODI) Viewer
OCX Control allows programs developed using tools like
Microsoft Visual Basic to display images. Programmers can use the Microsoft Office Document Imaging 2003 (MODI) Viewer
OCX Control from any development tool that supports ActiveX controls by adding Microsoft Office Document Imaging Viewer Control 11.0
to its visual toolbox.
Programmers can take advantage of a simple object model built around
an OCX Control and a collection of Objects to:
1. Display images
2. Perform optical character recognition (OCR)
3. Search for text within images
4. Copy and export recognized text and images
5. Combine multiple pages into a single compressed file

Features and Functions
Although the Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI) automation provides powerful
imaging and OCR features, it does not provide document scanning
functionality nor does it support image annotation.
Also, Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI) only
supports two image formats - TIFF (and Lossless TIFF)
and MDI (Microsoft Document Imaging format).
The OCR technology that is an integral part of Microsoft Office Document Imaging
(MODI) is from ScanSoft Inc.
